Why Prune Trees and Shrubs

Old branches on trees and shrubs produce very few flowers. The reason for pruning is to encourage new
flowering shoots. To maintain the shape of a tree or shrub branches may have to be checked once a year
to make sure that branches are not crossing off each other which could spoil the shape and which could
result in disease entering a wound from a rubbing branch.

When to Prune

Most pruning is carried out during the autumn and winter months as the framework of the plant is easy to
see and the flow of sap is greatly reduced.

What to Prune

The three D’s – Dead, Diseased and Damaged branches should always be removed. This is also known as
CROWN CLEANING. The centre of the tree should be left open to encourage air movement and allow light into
the heart of the tree.

Crown – Lifting:- Removing low branches to allow more light below the tree canopy

Crown – Reduction:- Reducing the top and side branches because the tree has become too large for its
surroundings.

Standard Trees and Semi-Mature Trees

Every garden should have at least one tree. Trees are invaluable providing structure and shape to the
smallest of gardens. Trees provide us with plenty of rich leaf colour throughout the seasons from red, purple,
yellow, orange and the  many shades of green. Coloured and textured bark, flowers and berries can also
display a spectacular show in your garden. It is very important to make the right choice of trees at this stage.

As well as planting specimen semi-mature trees in your garden which give INSTANT IMPACT, trees play an
important role in air quality, screening an unattractive object, privacy from an overlooking building, shelter from
exposed winds and it also encourages wildlife to make a habitat in your garden.

Tree planting is carried out during the dormant season from October to March, so stress isn’t put on the trees
during and after transplanting. Trees are double staked and strapped until such time as the roots have anchored
well into the soil. We are available at all times to provide aftercare tree maintenance such as pruning, adjusting
tying straps etc.

We will be happy to visit your garden to advice on the right choice of trees/shrubs. In particular, we will consider
Overhead  power lines & underground drainage.
